How To Choose Your ideal Tablecloth

1. The Occasion

When buying a tablecloth, the occasion for its use needs to be considered. Is it for a formal or casual purpose ?

Do you need it for those special occasions where you need to wow your guests or is it for everyday use?

The ocasion will help decisions on colour, length of the drop (the material that hangs over the table) and patterns.

Tablecloths for FORMAL occasions:

  • Are often of a lighter colour. Lighter shades of  pastels are often used.
  • Have a longer drop of 30 -40 cm.
  • Comprise plain to simple patterned fabrics.
  • And are often made of a heavier fabric.
Formal- Tablecloth

Tablecloths for CASUAL or everyday use:

  • Can be bright and vibrant.
  • Have a drop of 15 -25 cm.
  • And  are bought in wide variety of patterns and fabrics.

It is a good idea to invest in a Table Protector. They will stop your tablecloths from slipping and will also protect your table from accidental spills, Knicks and heat damage.

2. Size of Your Table

It sounds complicated to get the dimensions right for your new tablecloth . However it need not be….

Just follow these simple directions .

For Oval tables it is customary to measure as you would for a rectangular table.

When you buy Tablecloths remember Formal Tablecloth Drops are between 30 – 40 cm and Casual Drops are between 15 – 25 cm.

Not all tables are of a standard size so you may either need additional linens such as Runners or you may need to have your tablecloth Custom Made. 

If the tablecloth is too small for the table, place two runners on either sides of the tablecloth on the edge of the table.

Runners also serve to break the Tablecloth colour and can therefore add to the mood of the table setting.

3. The Number of Chairs

Nearly all tables come in Standard Sizes and therefore store bought tablecloths are most often sold according to the number of people who can be seated at the table.

Most standard Tablecloths are usually sold as 4,6,8.10 and 12 seaters.

For larger tables and non standard tables you will therefore need to consider having your tablecloth Custom Made.

When you buy tablecloths these are the most common dimension.

  • 4 Seater 180 cm x 180 cm
  • 8 Seater 230 cm x 230 cm

Round Tables:

  • 6 Seater 180 cm Round
  • 8 Seater 230 cm Round
